SFX Unit Truck
SKILLS USED: Organization, preparation, equipment maintenance, equipment tracking, consumables monitoring, paperwork.
The Special Effects truck is a home away from home on a film unit. It has to be equipped with all of the tools, materials, and equipment that might be required during the shoot.
Multiple times during my career I have been responsible for looking after the truck. This involves keeping the truck clean, equipment tidy, organized, stocked with consumables - All bases covered. It is imperative to know where everything belongs and the ability to have it available at a moment's notice. To expand on this, because ‘clean and tidy’ may give off “easy job, give it to the new guy” vibes. Shoot days are fast paced and stressful at the best of times. There are a lot of departments that have to do their part all in unison for a shoot to be possible. If there is any hold up (seconds can be a long time, minutes are an eternity in film) it can cause a serious issue with getting the shots needed that day. Organization and preparation are imperative for a happy truck and successful film.
When going to work abroad I have completed carnets and insurance forms for the SFX trucks. The dimensions, weight, cost, and quantity of each item being shipped needs to be accounted for. In addition hazardous materials need to be offloaded and shipped separately.
